Colmar: from Matthias Grünewald to Bartholdi
It was in Colmar that the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi was born in 1824, known throughout the world as the creator of "Liberty Enlightening the World", the monumental statue that symbolises the city of New York. He left behind several works in his hometown, including the statue of Martin Schngaueur, the "Little Alsatian Winegrower" and the Roesselmann Fountain. In 2004, his hometown erected, on the occasion of the centenary of his death, a replica of the Statue of Liberty, 12 metres high, installed at the northern entrance to the city. The Unterlinden Museum, in a former 13th century convent, houses a prestigious collection of Rhenish art from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance as well as the "Isenheim Altarpiece", a late Gothic masterpiece of rare dramatic intensity, painted around 1510 by Matthias Grünewald.

Colmar: from the Ungersheim Ecomuseum to Haut-Koenigsbourg
The Écomusée d'Alsace in Ungersheim, created in 1984, is an exceptional open-air museum that brings together 72 farmhouses and rural buildings. All were dismantled and then rebuilt on the site to preserve them. Today, more than a museum, it is a village of yesteryear, living, which comes to life in a natural environment with workshops and demonstrations from the craftsmen's stalls to the threshing shed and the school. Dedicated to the popular arts and traditions of Alsace, it also houses a collection of old merry-go-rounds.
In the Haut-Koenigsbourg massif, very close to Colmar, in the heart of the ruins of the medieval castle of Kintzheim, the Volerie des Aigles offers a unique opportunity to observe birds of prey up close as if in full flight. Right next door, the Monkey Mountain is home to Barbary Macaques, also called Barbary macaques, which live in conditions close to wild life and in a preserved environment that has contributed to the preservation of the species since 1969.
Alsace is also the land of fortified castles with many remains on the foothills of the Vosges. From Colmar and Kintzheim, continue your journey to discover the 12th century Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, one of the most visited monuments in France. Remarkably preserved, in the heart of nature, it peaks at 800m and offers a superb panorama of the valley.
