Montpellier: university city and economic center

Just 3 hours 15 minutes from Paris by TGV and 1 hour 15 minutes by plane, Montpellier enjoys a location that is as pleasant as it is attractive thanks to its mild climate and its 300 days of sunshine per year. Montpellier, the capital of Hérault, is above all the city-center of an agglomeration of 31 municipalities where more than 400 inhabitants live.

Its economic and cultural dynamism is that of a large university city which notably has the oldest Faculty of Medicine in France. Founded at the beginning of the 13th century, it was the first to create an amphitheater dedicated to the examination of corpses.

Born from the will of Mayor Georges Frêche, the new Odysseum district, in the immediate vicinity of the A9 motorway, was created from the end of the 1990s. Around a concept of development and urban planning, it brings together:

- The Place du XXème siècle or "Place des Grands Hommes" created in 2010 owes its name to the fifteen statues by François Cacheux representing political figures who have marked the history of the 20th century: Charles de Gaulle, Jean Jaurès, Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, Lenin Gandhi, Golda Meir, Nasser, Nelson Mandela and Mao Zedong. They echo the theme of "Memoria Mundi", a new educational space inaugurated at the end of July 2012.

Montpellier Baillargues - Vendragues: bullfighting traditions

East of Montpellier, heading towards Nîmes, on the A9 motorway, Baillargues is a two-thousand-year-old city founded on the site of the Roman villa of Ballius. It is separated from the commune of Castrie, known for its Renaissance castle often described as the "Versailles of Languedoc", by the Via Domitia.

Seaside resorts: 15 to 20 kilometres from Montpellier are two large, renowned resorts. Palavas-les-flots, around its canal, this small fishing port took off and developed in the 1970s. La Grande-Motte: created along with its marina in the 1960s, is known for its contemporary architecture and pyramid-shaped buildings.
