Midi-Pyrénées: aeronautics, tourism, technology, agriculture
Midi-Pyrénées is a large region that extends over 8 departments and has 7 Agglomeration Communities as well as an urban community. In this rural territory where unspoiled nature has retained its rights, it is the cities that concentrate the population with 3/4 of the inhabitants living in urban areas.
The drivers of the economy are numerous and reflect a diversity, reflecting this contrasting territory:
- Aeronautics: the leading industrial sector in Midi-Pyrénées with nearly 850 companies and big names like Airbus in Toulouse.
- Agriculture, which is also very dynamic, has enabled the development of the agri-food sector, the second regional industrial hub. - Tourism is also a major economic sector, now structured at the regional level via the network of "Grands sites des Pyrénées".
- With 5 universities, Midi-Pyrénées is the 2nd university region in France after Paris and the Île de France, a position which also strengthens the capacities of its research and development centers.
- The renewable energy sector for both industry and services is booming.
- High value-added sectors: in addition to aeronautics, space and agro-industries, they are developing and innovating in the fields of electronics, biotechnologies, nanotechnologies, ICT (information and communication technologies) and health.

In the Aube and the Pyrénées Orientales, the "sons of Carcassonne" refer to a group of five castles: Aguilar, Peyrepertuse, Puylaurens, Quéribus and Termes. These medieval fortresses were reinforced by Saint Louis during the conquest of Languedoc, marked by the defeat of Viscount Trencavel at Carcassonne and the end of the crusade against the Albigensians.

- The Corbières of Cathar country, renowned for its full-bodied and intense reds.
- The wines of Fitou, the oldest AOC in Languedoc, whose vineyard is located between the Corbières massif and the coastal vineyard.
- The Limoux vineyard is renowned for its sparkling wines, in particular Blanquette de Limoux.
- Malepère in the heart of the triangle of Carcassonne, Limoux and Castelnaudary.
- The Minervois which benefits from a privileged location between the Montagne Noire and the Canal du Midi.
The Canal du Midi is a World Heritage Site
The work, registered since 1996, crosses the Midi-Pyrénées regions in Haute-Garonne and in Tarn and Languedoc-Roussillon in Aude and Herault.
Studies had already been carried out in the 16th century when Francis I returned from Italy with Leonardo da Vinci. Pierre-Paul Riquet was 1 years old when he began working on the project, supported by Colbert. A royal edict marked its completion in 50. To the first section between the Garonne at Toulouse and the Aude at Trèbes, a second was added, between Trèbes and Sète, on the Mediterranean coast.
The Canal du Midi, whose work was spread out between 1667 and 1694, was largely completed by Riquet's death in 1681. Vauban, a great military architect, decided to add numerous aqueducts to its route. The Canal du Midi connects the Mediterranean and the Atlantic by waterway over 360 kilometres from Toulouse to the Thau lagoon in Marseillan on the Mediterranean coast. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has 328 structures: locks, aqueducts, bridges, tunnels, etc.
